Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Lake St. Louis, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair tests and maintains nationwide testing centers capable of performing these assessments. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be utilized. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing options.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test method has become more common. Numerous employers, courts, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse now prefer a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The standout advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection period—up to 90 days—through an observed process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an impactful method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged account of alcohol and narcotics by encasing biomarkers in the filaments of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection duration of up to roughly three months for alcohol and narcotics. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be gathered. When talking about head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In the event a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most intricate methods to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which reveal a shorter detection interval.
  • Hard to defeat: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more dependable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a drug usage trend over a timeframe, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements such as hair color and unique differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle exams", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
