Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Charity, Missouri. Whether requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in hair testing and have testing centers nationwide ready to perform the test. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle tests are selected by employers with strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days and monitored collection, making fraud nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise approach.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair stores a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to about three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not an option, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean hair from the scalp. Body hair indicates any other hair types including facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of processing a sample within a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry that an electronic chain of custody may not cover.

Screening is a swift initial evaluation for potential drug usage. Although Screening offers a cost-effective way to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive screen must be validated to hold up in legal settings. Samples that test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly complex to perform.

Confirmation of any positive results obtained during Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection window: Hair drug testing can identify substance use for up to three months, compared to urine tests which offer a much shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, as opposed to merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become evident in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Clarification: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
