Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Competition, Missouri. Specializing in this type of testing, we cater to those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, with facilities in cities across the nation. Typically, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body are suitable. Our hair tests target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be designed to meet specific needs.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle techniques. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often favor hair drug testing over urine analysis. Hair tests are ideal for entities with zero-tolerance drug use policies or for monitoring probation conditions. Their main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, secure observed collections, and a design that minimizes the chances of tampering. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine remains the more precise test.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a potent method for detecting drug or alcohol usage. Hair strands trap biomarkers in their fibers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entries the electronic chain of custody system might lack.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. This involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations as compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, which renders hair drug analysis a tricky methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat on, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical data: They can show a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Competition, MO, the former proves superior due to its higher detection precision and reliability.
Hair tests detect a wider range of substances, showcasing better accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis is not affected by short detection windows, providing a more accurate history of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Competition, MO, the extended detection window of hair follicle tests offers immense benefits. With a capability to recognize drug use up to 90 days prior, employers gain a fuller understanding of a candidate's substance habits.
This prolonged detection not only facilitates more informed hiring decisions but also supports ongoing employee assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
