Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Dixon, Missouri. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise is in hair analysis, with centers across the nation ready to carry out these tests. In most instances, hair from the crown of the head or body—ranging 1.5 to 2 inches—is used. Analyzed tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

The use of hair follicle tests has increased in recent times for drug testing purposes. Employers, legal systems, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse are turning to hair tests instead of the more common urine tests. These tests align with strict drug policies by offering a longer detection window of up to 90 days and are collected under supervision, making them hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged history of substance use. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal up to an approximate 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. It is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand comprising around 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system, which includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening presents a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be found presumptively positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical data: It delineates a pattern of drug use over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
