Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rolla, Missouri. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing includes centers across all U.S. cities prepared to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body suffice for testing. Hair analysis spans drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have seen increased reliance on hair follicle tests. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. This approach is favored by employers with zero tolerance for drugs and individuals on probation due to its longer detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, is collected with direct observation, and it's hard to tamper with. Urine tests remain more precise for drug use in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of evolving hair strands. When taken close to the scalp, it can yield approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation for detectable drugs. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Any positive screening result is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It's extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically carry a higher price compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
