Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle testing services in Ellsinore, Missouri. For those in need of a drug or alcohol assessment via hair sample, our centers are spread across all cities nationwide. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent times, utilizing a hair follicle drug test has become more common. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, which is conducted under supervision and is very hard to tamper with. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extended record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair may offer up to a roughly three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG tests, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advocated. It is advisable to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair exclusively pertain to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording any additional information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial quick assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening demand a secondary verification.

Should a sample result in a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to verify any positive screening results. Any samples identified as presumptively positive undergo cleaning before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process spanning Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug test results are hard to manipulate, increasing accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of substance use, not only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
