Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Falcon, Missouri. If you're required to undergo a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures nationwide availability, with centers in every city offering these services. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be tested. Options include tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing solutions.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have begun to replace more traditional methods in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often mandate hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probation personnel rely on these tests. The extended detection period of 90 days and supervised collection make them highly reliable, though urine tests remain best for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair acts like a record keeper, capturing drug and alcohol markers within its strands over time. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. This method is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample comprising 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) proximate to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, expanded panels, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. We refer to scalp hair when mentioning head hair and all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.) as body hair.

Process Overview

Four primary phases comprise the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage where a sample initially enters a lab's system. This stage ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for legal sessions. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample suggest positivity during Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. Extraction isolates drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Positive screening confirmations are performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before the confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab procedure is assessed under CAP's (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Reduced cheating potential: Cheating a hair drug test is quite strenuous, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: These tests reveal a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability for recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can vary due to hair color and personal growth differences.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
