Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Frankford, Missouri. Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities spread across all cities Nationwide prepared to administer a hair test whether for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options. Typically, hair from the crown or body may be used, as long as it measures 1.5 to 2 inches.

Recently, drug testing techniques have leaned more towards hair follicle tests. A preference is shown by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts for hair testing over the conventional urine tests. This method benefits employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation by offering up to a 90-day drug use detection period, through an observed collection which is almost uncheatable. Still, urine tests remain most effective for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged as a potent method, hair analysis serves as an effective means for identifying substance use. The hair strand, as it grows, encapsulates biomarkers, offering a long-term history of alcohol and drugs. When gathered close to the scalp, hair allows for a detection period that extends up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

Securing a sample measuring 1.5 inches, encompassing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When we mention head hair, we are specifically discussing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of drug test outcomes at the laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial entry of a sample into a lab's framework. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any requisite data input that isn't captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, expedited analysis for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient for excluding drug usage across most specimens, a positive screen requires corroboration for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive during Screening mandate further confirmation.

When screening suggests positivity, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation, as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notably hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical consumption data: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes an estimated 5-7 days before drugs become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
