Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Palmyra, Missouri. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our firm excels in this field, maintaining testing sites nationwide to facilitate testing at any desired location. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, sourced either from the scalp or body. Such tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

The incorporation of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening processes has been on the rise in recent years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This preference stems from the zero-tolerance policies many organizations uphold, as well as use in probation settings. Hair follicle tests offer extended detection windows up to 90 days and require sample collection under observation, complicating any attempts to falsify results. However, for detection within a recent timeframe, typically the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process of hair is simple, making it resistant to tampering and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be substituted. When we reference head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in the electronic chain of custody.

Screening denotes an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method for excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Every sample deemed presumptively positive in Screening mandates further confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology.

The Confirmation of every positive result found in Screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is extremely challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It can reveal a historical pattern of drug usage, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rate can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
