Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Grovespring, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing with centers available in all cities Nationwide for conducting hair tests. Generally, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown, though body hair can also be used. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

Over the years, the approach for drug testing has increasingly shifted to include hair follicle drug tests. More and more employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with stringent no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and for individuals on probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, obtained through a monitored collection, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term traces of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair displays a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp-specific hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a lab’s system, which includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid drug of abuse detection. Though Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive find in a Screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are pulled from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which renders hair drug analysis the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use over an extended duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows historical usage: They offer insight into the pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Results variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle located under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Grovespring, MO, hair follicle testing is favored over traditional urine testing for its superior accuracy and reliability. Hair testing has a longer detection period, which provides a comprehensive view of drug use that urine tests can't match. While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair testing offers a broader window, often proving more useful for employers committed to zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

One key advantage of hair follicle testing in Grovespring, MO, is its extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, hair testing offers employers a holistic understanding of an individual’s drug history. This insight makes it a preferred choice for companies aiming to maintain a drug-free workplace and make informed hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are notably tamper-resistant compared to other methods in Grovespring, MO. This significant advantage reduces the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that the results are both reliable and indisputable. These tests are conducted in a monitored setting, further enhancing their integrity and providing accurate outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
