Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hardin, Missouri. When you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair evaluations, with facilities available nationwide, including all cities, to conduct such tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or other body parts. Hair testing can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and specialists in Substance Abuse demand hair testing over conventional urine tests. Hair evaluations are preferred by organizations with zero-tolerance for drug use, legal entities, and individuals under probation. The primary advantage is the extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, through an observed collection method, minimizing the chance for manipulation. Yet, for recent drug consumption within five days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a historical timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively secure from manipulation, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system, verifying the sample's sealing and shipping correctness, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be verified to be defensible in court. All samples presumed positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumed positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's highly challenging to alter a hair drug test, increasing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a timeline of drug use over an extended period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hardin, MO, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests, showcasing enhanced detection reliability and precision. Hair testing's superior accuracy offers a compelling edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
