Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Horton, Missouri. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, our specialty in hair testing means we have locations across the country, including all cities, for performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair testing options cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by entities with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation offices due to their extended drug detection period of approximately 90 days, which is observed during collection and nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a powerful method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use within an approximately 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering with it is challenging, and it is easily shipped.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair—ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal portion of body hair can be used. When the term head hair is used, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair refers to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample gets cataloged into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: The test can outline a drug usage pattern over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug tests.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Horton, MO, hair follicle tests stand out against traditional urine testing. Detection accuracy and reliability are paramount benefits of hair follicle testing. Unlike urine tests, which capture more recent use, hair testing provides a holistic view of substance use over time, offering a superior indication of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

The appeal of hair follicle testing in Horton, MO lies in its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, hair analysis detects substance use over a period of up to 90 days, providing employers with a broad overview of an individual’s substance history. This prolonged detection capability ensures a more complete understanding of an applicant or employee's drug use habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Horton, MO, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle drug testing sets it apart. The potential for sample adulteration is drastically reduced, as it is nearly impossible to alter hair samples. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
