Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Lake Lotawana, Missouri. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses and has testing centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests for conducting drug testing has become increasingly common. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are the choice for employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window for drug usage, generally up to 90 days, collected securely, making cheating nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use testing within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, it is relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requirements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is preferred. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If hair from the scalp is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage involving the integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes verifying that the sample is appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not provided via an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that exhibit a presumptive positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out by means of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed before undergoing confirmation, as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in falsification: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can show patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth may affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
