Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Lawson, Missouri. When you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and our testing centers nationwide, including every city, can conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair or body hair is suitable. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other custom options.

Recently, conducting drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair over urine drug tests. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probationary individuals well. Key advantages include a detection window up to 90 days, overseen collection, and near immunity to deceit. For drug use in the past 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair functions as a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, it is recommended to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in processing a drug test result at a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This process includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not already completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples; however, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive indication in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and then prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is a highly complex methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are very hard to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: They offer a depiction of drug usage over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a lag of approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal variability in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
