Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lithium, Missouri. If a hair-based drug or alcohol check is required, our specialization in hair testing allows access to locations nationwide ready to conduct this service. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or other body parts is generally sufficient. Hair analysis can identify substances, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug assessments have become a prevalent method for substance screening. Various employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists now favor hair testing over traditional urine exams. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers frequently utilize hair analysis. This test boasts a longer window for substance detection, typically covering up to 90 days, includes monitored sample collection, and is highly cheat-resistant. Nevertheless, urine testing remains the preferred choice for substances used within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch cluster of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) cut nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhanced screenings, or tests above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The main stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not already available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result during screening must be confirmed for court acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive must undergo a supplementary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Harder to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It illustrates a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lithium, MO, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine tests by offering extensive detection windows and robust accuracy. While urine tests may miss sporadic use due to shorter detection times, hair testing covers up to three months, providing a more reliable view of an individual's substance use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
