Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have locations across all U.S. cities to perform these tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is adequate for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to meet specific needs.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests are popular among employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. Their major advantage lies in a prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, along with a secure, observable collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Conversely, urine tests remain the standard for detecting very recent drug use, within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those surpassing ten panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results consists of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This procedure includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for potential drug misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screening needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations markedly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering the outcome of a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It offers insights into the pattern of drug use over a timeline, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though referred to as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Sainte Genevieve, MO. While traditional urine tests are common, hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing detects drug use long after substances have left the bloodstream, unlike urine tests.

Employers in Sainte Genevieve increasingly prefer hair follicle testing due to its longer detection window and difficulty for subjects to alter results. This provides a more thorough understanding of a person’s substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
