Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Mercer, Missouri. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers nationwide are equipped to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can include other specific testing options.

In recent times, drug testing protocols increasingly feature hair follicle tests. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer them over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary individuals use these because they offer an extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug use in the past five days, urine tests are still the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective instrument for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the threads of progressing hair strands. When taken near the scalp, hair may deliver an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for substances. This method is effortless to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet including roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Method Summary

There are four principal steps in processing a laboratory drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This phase confirms the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assay for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and goes through Extraction preparation. At this juncture, substances are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus establishing hair testing as one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Affirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive specimen undergoes washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can signal drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Difficulty in manipulating hair tests leads to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides an overview of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect new use: Drugs become noticeable in hair after a delay of approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair assessments generally incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
