Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug tests in Milo, Missouri. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing ensures accurate results. With our nationwide centers, we've made getting tested simple. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or the body is needed. Our tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized requirements.

Hair follicle tests have increasingly replaced the traditional methods for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists favor them over urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies use these tests, along with probation systems. The key advantage is the longer detection span of up to 90 days, the monitored sample collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers retain biomarkers, offering an extensive timeline of alcohol and other drug intake. A sample taken near the scalp allows detection of drugs and alcohol for up to three months. It is easy to collect, less susceptible to tampering, and conveniently shipment-ready.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is an ideal amount for testing confirmation and screening. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be used. ‘Head hair’ refers strictly to scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ applies to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In processing drug test results, the lab follows four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s workflow. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry beyond an electronic custody system.

During Screening, an initial assessment for drug abuse is conducted. Although cost-efficient, while Screening effectively rules out drug use in many cases, it requires confirmation to be legally valid if a positive result emerges. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate confirmation via secondary procedures.

For a sample marked presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes Extraction. This phase extracts drugs at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing especially complex.

Confirmation takes place using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for any positive results from Screening. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to evade: The difficulty in compromising a hair test makes its results highly reliable.
  • Tracks past usage: It charts a history of drug use, instead of merely identifying recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Drug detectability in hair begins 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Variables like hair color and individual's hair growth can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", such tests evaluate the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
