Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Norwood, Missouri. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is well-versed in hair analysis. Our centers span all cities nationwide, ready to conduct hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may suffice. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, the inclination towards hair follicle drug testing has surged. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine method. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officials often select hair tests. The key advantage is the extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days, obtained through supervised collection, minimizing chances of tampering. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term information about alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 hairs (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, or expanded tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary review to identify drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging technique.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Throughout, the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Historical use profile: Hair testing reveals patterns of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual variances in hair growth.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
