Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Old Monroe, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to administer such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. These tests can analyze hair for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly integrated hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers. Their main advantage is a longer detection window for substance use, up to 90 days, collected under supervision and nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for substance detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair follicle testing is increasingly recognized as a crucial method for determining drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of alcohol and drug usage by entrapping biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. If collected near the root, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We advocate for using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If hair on the scalp is not available, an equal quantity of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The main steps in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s protocol. This involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for illicit drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be accepted in legal scenarios. Any samples showing probable positivity during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample come back as likely positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and set up for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lesser concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that show a preliminary positive result are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use across an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
