Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Philadelphia, Missouri. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is backed by centers across all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other custom testing needs.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle analysis. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and individuals under probation, offering longer detection windows up to 90 days, requiring supervised sample collection, making them highly resistant to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain top for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent resource in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A sample of roughly 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest determining the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s infrastructure. This process verifies that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes additional data input not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for abusive substances. While Screening is an economical approach to filter out drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, substances are pulled from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most demanding technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use across a span, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests provide superior advantages over traditional urine tests in Philadelphia, MO. A key benefit lies in their extended detection capabilities. These tests can unearth drug usage patterns extending back up to 90 days, offering unparalleled insight. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
