Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Sturgeon, Missouri. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, available nationwide. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair required from the crown or body, our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more customized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a prevalent method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer it over urine testing. This is due to its long detection window, up to 90 days, and its near-impossibility to cheat. Although for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair retains a chronological record of alcohol and drug exposure by incorporating biomarkers within the hair shaft's strands. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and various drugs. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and panels beyond 10 tests, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. To ensure precision, the specimen should be weighed with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. ‘Head hair’ refers specifically to scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ includes all other hair categories (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory's framework. This stage involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and inputting any supplementary data not already included by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase provides an initial rapid assessment for illegal drug presence. Although it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates further confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples that test positively during Screening require additional verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is extracted for the Extraction stage. This phase isolates drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other testing methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive findings from Screening are verified through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are thoroughly cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review in adherence to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests offer detection of substance use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Increased accuracy: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • History of substance use: This method reveals patterns of drug usage over time, not strictly recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: It necessitates roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
