Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bainville, Montana. For those needing drug or alcohol evaluation via hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this methodology, with facilities across the Nation for executing a hair examination. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for most instances. Hair analysis can reveal presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support other tailored hair test specifications.

Recently, incorporating hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair analysis over traditional urine assessments. Such tests are chosen by employers enforcing strict non-drug use rules, legal entities, and individuals on probation. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection timeline, often up to 90 days, executed in a supervised manner, with resistance to manipulation. However, for identifying drug consumption within the preceding 5 days, urine tests maintain superior precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, providing a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately difficult to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample approximately 1.5 inches long consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is recommended. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step that involves incorporating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for the presence of drugs of abuse. While screening is a cost-effective means of ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive result in screening requires confirmation for it to be accepted in court. Any samples that presumptively test positive during screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a pattern of drug use over a span rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
