Accredited Drug Testing in Sidney, Montana provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a hair or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug detection. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over the usual urine tests. These tests serve zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and those on probation. Their advantage includes a broad detection period reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and hardly susceptible to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Employing hair testing has increasingly become recognized as a robust approach for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a long-standing record for alcohol and drug detection by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly matching the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirmation that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold in court. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Upon receiving a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicated as presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
