In Colstrip, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and offer services nationwide. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair samples can reveal drug use, alcohol/ETG, or include other specialized testing.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a reliable method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Businesses with zero-tolerance policies and legal authorities often prefer this method. Hair tests extend drug detection up to 90 days, are collected professionally, and are difficult to cheat. Nonetheless, for short-term detection (last 5 days), urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for various substances. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length and consisting of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for assessment. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest checking the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair, an equivalent body hair amount can be taken. When specifying head hair, we only mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test, which are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a lab’s workflow. This phase includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although it offers a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This phase isolates drugs from hair concentrations significantly lower than those found in other methodologies, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples testing presumptive positive are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing identifies drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine testing with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to tamper with, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical evidence: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally come at a higher cost than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
