Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Glendive, Montana. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialized facilities throughout the nation, including all cities, can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. We provide tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and a variety of customized hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with stringent drug-free policies, legal authorities, and probation services due to their extensive detection window—up to 90 days—and the secure nature of observed sample collection. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying very recent use (within the last five days).

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of growing hair strands lock in biomarkers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. Specifically, hair gathered near the scalp can reveal a usage pattern over a span of nearly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test process encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the primary processing phase where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This stage involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug presence in most samples, legal admissibility demands that a positive screen undergo confirmation. All samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drug compounds are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Preceding confirmation, all samples identified as presumptively positive are cleansed if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, thus enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth rate variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
