Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Lame Deer, Montana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. For optimal results, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are generally needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine samples. Hair follicle tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and supervised individuals by offering an extended detection window—up to 90 days—through an observed process resistant to tampering. Yet, for recent usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch sample, roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil, consisting of about 200 strands near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal amount of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Though Screening effectively rules out drug use in most samples at a low cost, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further verification.

For presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), marking hair drug screening as the most intricate to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positives are washed before the confirmation step as needed. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Reduced chance of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage insight: It demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Consistency issues: Variables like hair color and individual growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis concerns the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lame Deer, MT

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests, hair analysis stands out due to its superior detection capabilities. Not only does it offer an extended detection window, but it also dramatically boosts accuracy and reliability in results, providing a comprehensive view of an individual's history and lessening the chance for errors.

The urine test, while effective for recent drug use, lacks the extensive history that hair testing provides. Employers and authorities favor hair testing for its ability to uncover long-term patterns, ensuring a thorough understanding of behavior, making it the preferred choice for stringent adherence to policy and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Lame Deer, MT

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, capturing a comprehensive substance use history of up to 90 days. This is invaluable for employers aiming to evaluate the long-term behaviors of potential or current employees, giving a clearer and more reliable portrayal of an individual's substance use patterns.

Unlike the limited detection period of urine tests, hair analysis covers a fuller spectrum of possible substance use. This longer detection window enhances employers' ability to ensure a safe and compliant workplace by understanding the holistic substance use profile of an individual over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Lame Deer, MT

Hair follicle testing is lauded for its tamper-resistant nature, significantly reducing the chance of sample adulteration. The collection process of the hair test is strictly monitored, making sure the results are trustworthy, undeniable, and reliable in high-stakes environments.

Unlike urine testing, which can be prone to sample tampering, hair testing offers a robust and secure alternative. Its steadfast resistance to interference ensures that the integrity of the test remains intact, making it a preferred method for employers seeking authentic results for their drug use assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
