Located in Ollie, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you are in need of a drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and have centers nationwide ready to assist you. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is typically required. Various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG can be detected through hair analysis.

Increased utilization of hair follicle testing for drug detection is evident in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often favor it over traditional urine testing. Hair tests are especially beneficial for entities enforcing strict drug policies and for those under legal scrutiny due to their much longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty in tampering. Nevertheless, for recent consumption down to five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. This involves verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be admissible in legal scenarios. Samples that are initially positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is initially positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the main specimen and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisional positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, making outcomes more precise.
  • Provides historical data: It can deliver a drug use pattern over a timeframe, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ollie, MT
Hair testing delivers unparalleled accuracy over traditional urine methods. Its extensive detection window provides a rolling overview of drug usage patterns, unlike the short-term snapshot that urine tests offer. This allows for a more comprehensive insight into an individual's history of substance use, enhancing decision-making processes among employers and authorities.
While urine tests are still preferred for detecting very recent use, hair follicle tests offer a superior understanding of long-term habits.

Reliability in hair testing eliminates many of the uncertainties associated with urine tests. For those seeking comprehensive analyses, hair testing is the preferred choice, ensuring a thorough review and detailed substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Ollie, MT
One of the primary benefits of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, which covers up to 90 days. This extensive period allows employers a more complete overview of an individual's substance use history, which is not achievable with traditional urine tests that detect drug use within a matter of days.

Incorporating long-term data, hair tests provide a detailed and clearer picture of an applicant or an employee’s drug use patterns over time, making it an invaluable tool for informed decision-making in the workplace. This thorough assessment helps teams in Ollie, MT make better hiring and monitoring choices, ultimately enhancing organizational standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Ollie, MT
Hair follicle testing greatly reduces the chances of tampering compared to other methods like urine testing. Its rigorous collection process ensures samples remain unaltered, delivering consistent and trustworthy results. This reliability is crucial in maintaining integrity, especially in environments where drug use policies are strictly enforced.

This uncompromisable approach assures organizations and individuals of test authenticity, leading to unquestioned results. This is particularly beneficial for compliance-oriented scenarios where thoroughness and reliability are non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
