Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in South Treasure, Montana. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test via hair, our experts in hair testing have centers spread across all cities serviceable Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary. Tests can identify various substances including drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

Over the past few years, drug testing methods have notably shifted towards including hair follicle analyses. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over typical urine screenings. Hair follicle testing serves those maintaining no-drug-use policies, legal entities, and those under probation. The significant advantage is the extended detection ability, lasting up to 90 days, conducted through monitored processes, minimizing opportunities for tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting usage within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A proximal 1.5-inch strand sample consisting of about 200 hairs (around the size of a #2 pencil) will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, it indicates scalp hair only, whereas body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of a positive screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
