Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Stanford, Montana. Specializing in hair testing, we maintain facilities in all cities across the nation to conduct these tests. In most cases, you must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the top of your head or body. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly involve hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts frequently choose hair tests over standard urine testing. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary arrangements benefit from this testing's extended detection window, which is typically up to 90 days. Although nearly impossible to fudge due to observed collection, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Using hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures biomarkers in its strands as it grows, offering a detailed timeline of substance use. A sample taken from near the scalp can detect substances for nearly 3 months. Collection of hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, made up of about 200 strands (roughly matching the girth of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp equals 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for testing and authentication. For EtG, supplementary tests, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair can't be provided, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By scalp hair, we mean hair on the head specifically, while body hair comprises any other hair types (face, axillary, etc.).

Process Review

Processing a drug test in the lab encompasses the following key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with introducing a sample into the lab’s workflow. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and enters any data absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a swift preliminary check for illicit substances. It is cost-effective to identify non-usage in many samples; however, for legal admissibility, a positive result must be validated. Samples showing a positive screening result need an additional confirmation stage.

When a sample shows positive during Screening, more hair from the sample is used for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair testing a more complex procedure.

Positive results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive are appropriately cleaned before validation. The workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and is ISO / IEC 17025 accredited.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, surpassing urine tests which have a shorter range.
  • Hard to deceive: It's challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers chronic usage insights: It outlines drug usage patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited in detecting recent use: Drugs become visible in hair roughly 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically costs more compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
