Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings for Ashland, Nebraska residents. If you're in need of alcohol or drug hair testing, we are experts in the field with locations across all American cities for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for such testing. Organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse evaluators often opt for hair analysis over the traditional urine test. It's favored by zero-tolerance companies, courts, and probationary monitoring. The major advantage lies in its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, an observed collection process, making the process nearly tamper-proof. Conversely, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting very recent drug use, within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the first stage of integrating a sample into the lab system. This includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in legal contexts. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive initially in Screening, further hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the toughest test to administer.

To verify a positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides chronological data: It can reflect a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Inability to pinpoint recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result deviations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
