Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Assumption, Nebraska. Our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with centers in every major city ready to assist. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored solutions for your testing needs.

In recent years, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle methods. Many employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method aids employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probation services. The foremost advantage is its extended detection time, roughly 90 days, with a supervised collection process that's hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system, verifying the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for abuse drugs. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally tenable. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumed positive during Screening, further hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

To confirm any positive screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies are used. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical identification: A consistent pattern of drug use over time is revealed, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become visible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually costs more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Drug metabolite concentration variations in hair can occur due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
