Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hampton, Nebraska. Need a drug or alcohol test via hair? Our company specializes in hair analysis, with testing sites across every city nationwide able to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been more commonly included in methods for substance analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for employers with zero drug tolerance, legal proceedings, and probation cases. A key advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain best for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged insight into alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can present up to an approximate 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing around 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where the sample is initially entered into the lab's system. It involves checking if the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data that an electronic chain of custody system hasn't provided.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While this is an efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen has to be validated to be legally binding. Any samples that appear positive in Screening will need further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample may be positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening challenging.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine assessments have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, providing more reliable results.
  • Shows historical usage: Offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Frequently known as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
