Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Kronborg, Nebraska. For a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise focuses on hair-based testing, with facilities in cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Hair length should be 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body in most instances. Hair tests check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a common method for detecting substance use. It’s increasingly requested by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers rely on these tests for accuracy. The main advantage is its extended detection timeline, covering up to 90 days, with monitored collections making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for drug usage in the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, creating a long-term record of drug and alcohol use. By acquiring hair close to the scalp, it can reveal a nearly three-month window of alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It is advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equal quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab handling of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial input of a sample into a lab's system. This entails ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening handles an initial expedited evaluation for substances of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to hold up in court. Samples denoting a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are collected from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any screening positives is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter scope.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair tests are tough to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is actually on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
