Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle screenings in Macy, Nebraska. Whether it's for drug or alcohol assessment, they excel in follicle analysis, offering services across Nationwide locations. Typically, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored test options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained prominence in drug screenings, replacing traditional urine tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer them. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationary contexts benefit from follicle tests' extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, and its nearly cheat-proof quality. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 strands of hair (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing. For EtG tests, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair should be collected. Specifically, head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that wasn't included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are eluted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage history: It can reveal a pattern of drug use across a timeline, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Hair takes around 5-7 days before drugs can be detected.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
