Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Overland, Nebraska. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we offer facilities across cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. These assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle assessments are preferred by employers with stringent drug-free policies, legal authorities, and individuals under probation. The significant advantage of these tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under strict supervision, which makes cheating practically impossible. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a substance test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not performed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample proves presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening compared to other methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing step if necessary before affirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are very challenging to falsify, thus the results tend to be more reliable.
  • Sequential usage data: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use history rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days before substances become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur more costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
