Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Richfield, Nebraska. When you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, and with our testing facilities nationwide, any city can conduct a hair test. To conduct this test, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head is necessary, or body hair can be used when suitable. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

In recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has increased. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are endorsed by employers with strict drug-free policies and are used by the courts and individuals under probation. The chief advantage of such tests is their extended detection period, typically covering up to 90 days, collected through an observed method that is nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the standard choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered next to the scalp, hair can present up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect hair, relatively challenging to alter, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the standard sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair might be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This task includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to primarily rule out drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to ensure admissibility in court. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening indeed require further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Improbability of deceit: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug assessment, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can exhibit a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are usually costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and individual growth rate variability can manipulate the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
