Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Saint Paul, Nebraska. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we have widespread testing centers nationwide. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of head or other body hair is needed for most tests. Our hair tests provide options to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom requests.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained traction among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts who prioritize them over urine tests. These tests suit zero-tolerance policies and probation conditions due to their extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, with results observed during collection—making cheating nearly impossible. For recent drug use, under 5 days, urine tests offer the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by ensnaring biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance use. While Screening is an economical means to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that test positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, making the findings more reliable.
  • Gives historical data: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
