Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Trumbull, Nebraska. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched. We have facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair segment tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are required. Our analyses encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the protocol for drug screening has increasingly encompassed hair follicle testing. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Ideal for organizations with strict drug-free policies, and enforced by legal bodies, these tests offer benefits like an extended detection window of up to 90 days and are difficult to manipulate. Still, for assessing recent use within five days, urinalysis remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by retaining biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If extracted near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, supplementary testing, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. In scenarios where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial, axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

The four key stages in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory system, involving verification of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing extra data entry if not using an electronic custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require additional confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. This involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (urine, oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review in alignment with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the capability to track drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides a usage pattern: Hair tests offer an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair between 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
