In Uehling, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle analyses. Specializing in this method, we provide testing facilities nationwide. For accurate results, individuals need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, though body hair might suffice in some instances. Hair screening evaluates various substances, from drugs to alcohol or even customized parameters.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for substance detection. Many organizations, from workplaces to legal entities, prefer hair analysis over traditional urine testing. This test caters to entities with strict drug policies, offering an extended detection window up to 90 days and is nearly impossible to fake. Yet, for the recent 5-day detection, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substance consumption. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section with around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The four primary phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's framework. This entails confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to negate drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be accepted in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is pulled from the starting sample and prepped for Extraction. During this process, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a markedly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug assessments include:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug utilization for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It can present a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine testing in Uehling, NE. It stands out due to its enhanced detection duration of up to 90 days, significantly more extended than urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
