Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Virginia, Nebraska. When in need of a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and we offer testing facilities in every city nationwide capable of handling hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair examinations can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug testing has surged, becoming a preferred method over traditional urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers often request hair analyses due to their extended 90-day detection period. Though urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within 5 days, hair tests offer observed sample collection and are hard to tamper with.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a prolonged history of substance use. Collecting hair near the scalp can yield a detection time frame of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and can be transported with ease.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair is an acceptable substitute. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample as it enters a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry that is not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial cursory inspection for drugs of abuse. While it is an economical approach to dismiss drug presence in the bulk of samples, a positive screening requires validation for legal acceptability. Samples that tentatively test positive at Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples that show a tentative positive in Screening, additional hair from the original sample is taken and readied for Extraction. In this phase, hair provides drugs at a notably reduced concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening entails the use of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation when necessary. The overall process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a historical drug-use pattern over a timeframe, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drug detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Possible result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in Virginia, NE, due to its superior detection capabilities. While urine tests can only detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a broader assessment, identifying substance use over a more extended period. This provides employers with a better understanding of an individual's long-term drug behavior, a critical factor in maintaining a drug-free work environment.

This testing method is robust, providing highly accurate results that boost confidence in outcome reliability over the standard urine test. Employers and individuals benefit from dependable data, ensuring a more secure and informed decision-making process.

Extended Detection Window

In Virginia, NE, hair follicle testing provides an unmatched detection window of up to 90 days, allowing employers comprehensive insight into an individual's substance consumption history. This expansive detection period is instrumental for those needing a thorough understanding of substance use patterns, greatly surpassing the temporal limitations of urine testing.

Employers benefit from this broad timeframe, as it provides a historical view of drug use, important for assessing risk and personnel management. The extended detection serves as a pivotal tool for responsible hiring and effective workplace policy enforcement.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Virginia, NE, significantly reduces the potential for sample tampering, offering trustworthy and definitive results. This method ensures the highest level of integrity, as samples are difficult to conceal or manipulate, unlike other testing procedures prone to tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
