Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Washington, Nebraska. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair evaluations. We possess testing locations in all cities across the nation capable of conducting these screenings. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is necessary. Hair assessments can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

More often in recent times, drug testing methods now incorporate hair follicle tests. Employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analysis over conventional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation heavily utilize hair follicle assessments. The key advantage is its long detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, gathered in supervised conditions, and it's highly resistant to manipulation. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longer-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. By collecting hair near the scalp, it's possible to achieve a detection span for up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing around 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) at the scalp's proximity gives 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a collection of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. For body hair, this encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of primary steps in processing a drug testing result in the lab consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes missing data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary swift examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal situations. Any samples initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at much-diminished concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening ranks as the most complex methodology.

Confirmed positive screening outcomes are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a washing step before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Reveals historical consumption: It shows drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
