Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Roach, Nevada. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our expertise in hair analysis is supported by a nationwide network of testing facilities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be tested. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for substance testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies and by the judiciary for individuals on probation. The advantage of hair follicle drug screening is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that resists tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests still prove to be the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair fibers lock in biomarkers as they grow, offering a long-term record of alcohol and other substances. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a history of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect hair samples, difficult to tamper with them, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is recommended to gather 150mg of the sample. Usage of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. When scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initiation of a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive through Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a concentration lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

Positive screening outcomes require GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for Confirmation. All samples that presumptively test positive undergo necessary washing prior to Confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Hair drug tests provide a usage pattern over time rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a 5-7 day delay before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Variation in hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand and not the scalp's follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Roach, NV, hair follicle testing significantly surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection capability and reliability. The meticulous nature of hair analysis delivers accurate results, uncovering drug use patterns undetectable by traditional urine testing. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
