Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Zephyr Cove, Nevada. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing facilities available in all cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent for conducting drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses. Hair follicle assessments serve organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection scope, typically reaching up to 90 days, with observed collection processes, minimizing chances of fraud. However, for detecting recent use within the past 5 days, urinalysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair samples is increasingly viewed as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal alcohol and drug usage over a period reaching up to three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, hard to manipulate, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or cases requiring more than 10-panel screens, it is advisable to procure 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate sample measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of bodily hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Bodily hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. This stage checks that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid test to identify drug use. Although it’s cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive result from the Screening must undergo confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If the initial Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: Cheating on a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It illustrates a timeline of drug use, highlighting patterns rather than solely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days to appear after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
