Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. For those in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our expertise and nationwide testing facilities ensure thorough service. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required, with body hair being an alternative. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has grown over the years. This method is now preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Ideal for employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and probationers, it highlights drug use for up to 90 days through an observed collection process, making dishonesty exceedingly difficult. Yet, recent drug use within the last 5 days is better identified by urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has proven itself to be a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can supply up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is integrated into the laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for it to be valid in court. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most sophisticated method to execute.

The affirmation of any positive Screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can offer a trend of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently known as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
