Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in East Orange, NJ. Specializing in hair substance evaluation, our nationwide centers are ready to serve you. Whether it's hair from your head or body, possessing 1.5 to 2 inches of growth is crucial. Our services include tests for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to meet your specific needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug screening has surged recently. This method, preferred over the typical urine test, is demanded by companies with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. Its advantage lies in the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, and its resistance to tampering. Despite this, for detecting recent use within five days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is effortless, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will amount to 100mg, the optimal quantity for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advocated. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be procured. In referring to head hair, we denote scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab's framework. This incorporates verifying that the sample was sealed and conveyed correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of concern. Although Screening is a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for Preparation for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a remarkably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening find is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 regulations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests feature a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can present a pattern of drug consumption over an extended duration, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to reveal recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair development can impact the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

This capability provides employers a detailed view of a candidate or employee's substance history, surpassing traditional methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
