Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Essex Fells, NJ. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis with locations across all cities Nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair can often suffice. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified requirements.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days and the secure, observed collection procedure that is challenging to compromise. Yet, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within a window of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil width) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, a sample weight of 150mg is advisable. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount from body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" refers to all other types such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test outcome involves four primary actions: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is where a sample's initial processing into a lab's system happens. It verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary check for abused drugs. While cost-effective at excluding drug use in many samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court use. Any presumptively positive Screening samples require secondary confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Positive screening confirmation occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo pre-confirmation washing as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result validity.
  • Provides historical data: Offers insights into drug consumption trends over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs need roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze hair strands, not the follicles underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
