Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing caters to individuals in Glenwood, New Jersey. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair testing, our network extends across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for testing. The scope of hair tests includes drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening processes recently. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method benefits employers with zero-tolerance policies, judiciaries, and probationers due to its extended drug use detection window, spanning up to 90 days. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of substances by capturing biomarkers within its strands. When sampled near the scalp, it can indicate alcohol and drug use history for up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We advocate for measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for commonly abused drugs. Although it efficiently excludes drug use for most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for court validity. Presumptive positive samples from Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike shorter-range urine tests.
  • Cheating-proof nature: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: They provide usage patterns over time, not only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
