Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hightstown, New Jersey. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our centers nationwide, including those in all cities, are equipped to perform hair analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. Hair tests may be used for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or for other specific testing needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been adopted for drug testing purposes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of urine tests. Businesses, legal institutions, and probationary individuals utilize this testing due to its extended detection time, usually up to 90 days, and its verified collection process. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust mechanism for spotting drug and alcohol intake, hair testing offers an extended historical record by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fiber weaving as it grows. Providing a detection span of up to roughly three months, a sample acquired near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug consumption patterns. The method is straightforward to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to dispatch.

A snippet measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of nearly 200 strands (approximating the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields about 100mg, ideal for assessment and verification. For examinations requiring EtG, additional analyses, or more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to utilize a jeweler's scale for accurate specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" pertains strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial procedures in lab processing for a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary handling of a specimen within a lab's framework. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplements any absent data not recorded by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening conducts a preliminary scan for substance-related abuses. Despite being a budget-friendly approach to eliminate suspected drug consumption in most cases, a Screening-positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples yielding presumptive positive outcomes in Screening necessitate further verification.

Upon a presumptive positive sign during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. Drugs are retrieved from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis among the most challenging methods to execute.

Positive Screening results are authenticated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary cleansing. The comprehensive lab process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair status and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection horizon: Detects drug intake up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Resists circumvention: The resistance of hair drug tests to manipulation ensures more precise results.
  • Historical insights: Offers an extended timeline of drug usage patterns, surpassing mere recent use analysis.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection in hair manifests approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Price: Hair drug screenings typically incur higher costs than alternate testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Variations in hair coloration and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands solely and not the underlying follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
