Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments right in Homestead Park, New Jersey. Whether you require hair tests for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair analysis is unmatched. We operate testing facilities across all cities nationwide to accommodate your needs. Typically, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Hair testing can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other parameters.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for determining substance use, favored by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals. Unlike standard urine tests, hair assessments are ideal for entities with strict anti-drug stances, offering an extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection method, making tampering extremely difficult. Nonetheless, for drug use verification within a 5-day period, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. The hair carries a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands' fibers. When clipped near the skin, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample comprised of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, auxiliary tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be selected. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result is broken down into four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary steps of assimilating a specimen into the laboratory system. This encompasses checking the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening consists of an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. While it is an economical means to rule out substance intake in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to ensure its acceptability in court. Those samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

In cases of a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and set for Extraction. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most complex techniques to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed before verification as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a diminished detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Supplies historical data: It reveals a trend of substance use over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detectable levels of substances in hair manifest approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Discrepancies in findings: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Homestead Park, NJ, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine tests by providing a broader detection scope. The reliability of hair tests ensures accurate identification of drug use over months, as opposed to the shorter windows offered by urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
